Formal training programs in medical assisting is now the preferred requirement for most employers. Individuals in California are required to successfully complete an accredited Certificate, Diploma or Associate Degree program in Medical Assisting. The diploma or associate degree is the most prevalent.

  • A diploma ranges from 32 weeks to 52 weeks.
  • An associate degree generally takes 2 years to complete.
  • Both can be completed during day, evening or online or a combination of both: online and on campus.

See the list below of course providers in California ranging from vocational-technical schools, community and junior colleges and private colleges and universities.

Admission criteria to both programs is that you must have either a High School Diploma or GED and have a good command of the English language. Some accredited programs also include an internship that provides practical experience in physician's offices, hospitals or other health care facilities.

Medical Assisting Career Path

What is great about the Associate Degree Program is that it can be used a stepping stone to further your education for example to become a polysomnographer or a Certified Cardiac Technician. A Medical Assisting Degree opens many doors to other technical professions as long as you keep up with your CEU's (continuing education units). Students who have graduated from a Diploma program can opt to work in the capacity of a medical assistant and undertake to complete their Assoc. Degree during the evening or online. This way they can earn money while continuing their education for better opportunies and better pay.
