Medical Assistant Programs in Florida

Medical assistants in Florida can complete their education in only 9-12 months if they opt for the certificate or diploma program, or within two years, if they choose to enroll in the associate's degree course. These credentials are earned by enrolling in any of Florida's schools that offer a course in medical assisting. Technical schools, vocational schools, or local colleges offer the same curriculum for medical assistants. However, when choosing a program, you have to ensure that the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health and Education Programs, or CAAHEP, recognizes the school and its medical assisting program. This is important if you plan to take the certification exam for medical assistants. The other accrediting board is the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools, or ABHES.

Florida State does not require that medical assistants pass a certifying exam. Nevertheless, having yourself certified gives you a competitive edge over non-certified practitioners.

Training Route and Programs

Medical assisting programs in Florida are offered both on-campus or online. Thus, students who cannot go full time in their studies have the option to complete studies online and during convenient hours for them.

Because the training program involves both accounting and administrative duties as well as clinical and technical skills, most subjects are focused on office and organizational procedures, telephone etiquette, computer skills, medical coding and claims, reimbursement approaches, and filing insurance claims. To have a wider knowledge about the medical field, the following course subjects are taught as well: body systems, allied health, patient assessment, basic pharmacology, and clinical procedures, among others.

Completing a formal medical assistant program opens up the door to several employment opportunities . Apart from working as medical assistants, you can also work as medical receptionist, medical biller, insurance coder or clinical assistant.

As the growing aging population in Florida continues to rise and with the budding outpatient health facilities, the shortage in healthcare workers needs to be addressed. This means more jobs for people who have administrative and clinical skills, that is, the medical assistants.
