Medical Assisting programs in Pennsylvania

Pennyslvania Allied Health Professional

Pennsylvania, the sixth largest state in the US, has an estimated population of 12.6 million and has a growing aging population that seeks constant medical care. Not only that, with residents becoming more health conscious, primary health care providers such as doctors and nurses have no recourse, but to transfer their administrative responsibilities to medical support personnel. And this is where medical assistants come in. As doctors focus more on their roles and tasks of making people well or setting up their own private practices, they will need medical assistants to keep their offices running smoothly and efficiently.

Pathways of Becoming a Medical Assistant

There are three different types of medical assistants you can choose from: Clinical, Administrative and Clerical. Clerical and Administrative medical assistants perform many of the administrative taks such as updating/filing medical records and bookkeeping, whereas clinical staff spend less time on administrative duties and more on patient care such as preparing and administering medications, prepping for examinations etc.

Acquiring formal training in the medical assisting field is what will give you more job opportunities. Although it's not a requirement - completed an accredited medical assisting program is strongly recommended. Most hospitals and physycian now opt for formally trained medical assistants (who will require minimum training on the employer's part) and can perform his or her tasks with minimal supervision. As competition becomes stiffer, the more you have to ensure that you have the proper credential if you want to work in this field.

In Pennsylvania, medical assistant programs are available in vocational schools, local colleges and universities. If you are a career shifter, a working student, or just cannot attend school on fulltime basis, online medical assisting courses are also offered. Typically, it will take you about a year or less to complete the certificate course in medical assisting, while the associate's degree takes about two years to finish.

Among the areas that you will study are anatomy, body systems, basic pharmacology, laboratory procedures, medical laws, and various other clinical methods. The program also includes lessons on how to go about your clerical responsibilities such as accounting, billing, recordkeeping, bookkeeping, insurance processing, reimbursement methodologies, and other administrative tasks. To complete your medical assisting programs, you are required to undergo practicum in a physician's office or any similar healthcare facility.
