Medical Assisting programs in South Carolina

South Carolina Medical Assisting

In South Carolina, Charleston and Greenville are the metro areas that have the highest percentage of medical assisting jobs based on population, with the numbers running up to the thousands. As the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates, the demand for more medical assistants (MAs) will increase further as doctors concentrate on their roles as primary healthcare providers. Because of this, additional medical support is needed to perform tasks such as receiving patients for an appointment, taking vital signs, preparing specimens for lab testing, responding to billing and reimbursement concerns, and filling up insurance forms, among others.

Skilled individuals trained in the role of a medical assistant can well perform these tasks. If you see yourself thriving in such an environment, then you should consider a career in medical assisting.

Pathways of Becoming a Medical Assistant

There are three different types of medical assistants you can choose from: Clinical, Administrative and Clerical. Clerical and Administrative medical assistants perform many of the administrative taks such as reception work, accounts payable/receivable and scheduling appointments etc., whereas clinical staff spend less time on administrative duties and more on patient care such as prepping for examinations, recording vital sign and taking/recording medical histories.

South Carolina has over 10 schools (excluding online schools) that offer medical assisting programs, which are either accredited by CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) or by ABHES (Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools). These accrediting agencies ensure that training programs offered by medical assisting schools are on the same level of quality as laid down across other States.

To begin a career in medical assisting, you have to complete either a certificate or an associate's degree in medical assisting. Both programs cover areas such as body systems, medical terminology, lab testing and procedures, medical laws and ethics, accounting and bookkeeping, insurance processing, and general office practices. After completing the lecture and clinical aspects of the training, the next stage is the internship program that is required of all students.

While both programs lead to employment opportunities as medical assistant, those who finish the two-year associate's degree has more advantage over certificate graduates in terms of nature of work and complexity of cases handled. In addition, moving to the bachelor's degree program is easier if you complete the two-year course.
