Medical Assistant Programs in Texas

Texas Medical Assisting

Medical assisting in Texas is a lucrative career choice if your interest and strength is in healthcare and office management. If you are a student or a career shifter wondering about how to start your medical assisting education, read on to know more about this career option.

How to Become a Medical Assistant in Texas

There are three different types of medical assistants you can choose from: Clinical, Administrative and Clerical.

Clerical and Administrative medical assistants perform many of the office taks such as:

  • Patient records management
  • Accounts payable/receivable
  • Secretarial duties (greeting patients, scheduling appointments, etc.)

Whereas clinical staff spend less time on administrative duties and more on patient care such as:

  • Preparing and administering medications as per physicians' instructions,
  • Drawing blood samples,
  • Taking x-rays and performing electrocardiograms (ECGs), etc.

In Texas, medical assisting training is available in vocational and technical schools, junior colleges, and some universities. Those who cannot attend school on a regular basis have the option to enroll in online courses instead of the on-campus programs.

When choosing a school, you must ensure that the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) accredits the medical assisting program it offers. Otherwise, you will not be allowed to take the certification exam for medical assistants.

Normally, it takes a year or two to complete the certificate course or associate's degree program in medical assisting. During your training, instruction will focus on the clerical and clinical duties and responsibilities of medical assistants. Thus, curriculum includes lectures on administrative tasks such as accounting, billing, insurance forms, and other general office procedures. On the clinical side, the program of study includes understanding medical terms, use and maintenance of medical equipment, taking vital signs, assessment of patient history and laboratory methods and procedures.

Becoming a certified medical assistant in Texas is not a requirement to finding a job as a medical assistant professional. However, passing the certification exam tells that you have the aptitude for the kind of work you are applying for. Graduating from an accredited medical assisting school is one of the requisites to sit in an exam. Thus, check out if there are other certification requirements provided by recognized institutions such as the American Association of Medical Assistants, National Healthcareer Association, and National Center for Competency Testing to prepare for the exam.

Passing the certification exam for medical assistants means you have to re-certify after 60 months thereafter.
