Medical Assisting programs in Utah

Utah Medical Assisting

The medical assisting profession is one of the fastest growing careers in the country today. As the health sector further intensifies its services and improves the system, demand for medical related jobs is sure to increase.

Medical assistants perform administrative responsibilities such as bookkeeping and recordkeeping, handling credit and collection, record medical history of patients, perform clerical duties such as taking dictation and transcribing doctors' findings, scheduling next physician appointment, and responding to queries pertaining to billing and insurance claims.

On the clinical aspect of the job, medical assistants are expected to take patients' vital signs including height and weight, prepare patients for their doctor appointment, arrange for laboratory tests, collect specimens for diagnostic testing, sterilize medical equipment, and assist doctors during patient examinations.

Pathways of Becoming a Medical Assistant in Utah

As an aspiring medical assistant, you should check the medical assisting programs offered in local colleges or vocational schools in your area. You must ensure that programs are accredited either by ABHES or by CAAHEP because graduating from accredited schools is the number one requirement for eligibility to take the certification exam.

Next, you must decide on which course to take. If you opt for the shorter route, then completing the certificate course enables you to find a medical assisting job after a year of study. You may also opt for the more intensive program or the two-year associate's degree in medical assisting. After the course, you may already begin working as a medical assistant or study further to obtain a bachelor's degree.

Whichever course you take, you will be required to complete an internship program in a doctor's office or hospital setting.

Because most employers choose to hire formally trained medical assistants, another credential that will further boost your hiring potential is passing the certification exam for medical assistants. Certified medical assistants are generally paid higher, have better career advancement opportunities, and enjoy job security than non-certified medical assistants. Thus, if you are after job stability and a fulfilling career as a medical assistant, ensure that you take the medical assistant certification exam.
